To Flip or Not to Flip that is the question!

After hearing the Ted video about the Kahn Acadamy and this concept of Flipping the classroom I was excited! I have always enjoyed going to technology conferences and hearing about new ideas around teaching. Flipping is not a new concept I had heard about it previously. I however had not heard about Kahn and am very interested in what his program has to offer me. I would love to be able to try somthing like this out in my classroom but the reality of lack of computer for my students to use keeps coming up. I might still try out some of the videos and have students use them to enrich lessons. The more technology informational sessions I attend the more I come back to school all excited about a new program or idea but then I soon get reminded of the reality. I do have some computer in my classroom to use and I hope I can add a few in the next couple of years however the possibility of all students having an electronic device to use at school is seeming far off in my mind. I do really love the idea of taking my entire classroom and turning it upside down changing how I do things... I am trying out new things with the resources I have. I think people like Kahn have something and as an educator I need to pay attention... There just seems to be a lot of questions unanswered... How?

I would love to flip my classroom also. I wonder if we could work out a high school/elementary school partnership. Maybe some of your students could create some learning clips for elementary kids to watch! Maybe we could team up for some tech stuff too! Oh the possibilities, if we had the equipment!

Dawn,

It seems it's always about the lack of up-to-date technology. Even when we have it, it seems that it stops working as work-arounds, updates, and modifications are made to the network. Add to that that students don't always have access to the technology at home (an unfortunate reality that we must assume is so), and our job becomes even more difficult. I have visions of students having their own laptops at all times, with Internet access at home fo rall. I think Comcast has a program for students now that is really inexpensive. Unfortunately, some families can't afford even that ($10/month).

Dawn and Wendy,

It seems as thought by the time schools get the "latest" technology, the next best thing comes out leaving teachers one step behind the students when we should be one step ahead of them.
